Metal blacking (sometimes called ‘blackening’) is a finishing operation that changes the chemical composition of certain metal surfaces. This process creates a strong barrier on the surface of the metal that adds resistance to corrosion and issues with moisture. Furthermore, this form of corrosion resistance is generally more affordable than other finishing options such as plating or painting the metal.
This is a chemical metal blackening process, which means that it works through the use of chemical agents that adhere to the surface of the metal being treated. Blackfast's room temperature blacking process is a simple dip operation specifically designed for use in factories. The process results in a uniform colouring is obtained over machined surfaces, threads and blind holes. Blacking is achieved by chemical conversion of the metal surface. The process entails degreasing, immersion in a surface conditioner, and blacking solution. Corrosion protection is afforded by a final immersion in a dewatering oil.

There are two distinct blacking processes that can be used for metal finishing. Hot metal blackening operates through the use of sodium hydroxide, which is combined with oxidizing agents such as sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite.
However, cold blackening of steel and some other ferrous metals is also possible. In this case, the process works at room temperature and does not require a hot solution in order to work. Chemical blackening of steel is made possible through the application of copper or selenium.
