Blackfast is a specialist finish for colouring iron and steel components black. It is a safe and easy-to-use chemical immersion process operated at room temperature. The product’s unique quality is that the finish does not result in an alteration to the dimension of the component. Any manufacturer of precision engineered components requiring a decorative finish is a potential customer. These are commonly found within the tooling and machinery manufacturing industry.
No DimensionalChange -
Many machined parts are manufactured to a tight tolerance, which means plating or painting are not acceptable.
Corrosion Resistance -
The black surface absorbs wax, oil or rust-preventative sealants to give corrosion protection.
Sales Appeal -
A durable black finish enhances the appearance and value of a wide range of manufactured articles.
Safety - By reducing
light glare from moving tooling or machinery, it eases fatigue and contributes to operator safety.
What Is Metal Blacking?
Metal blacking (sometimes called ‘blackening’) is a finishing operation that changes the chemical composition of certain metal surfaces. This process creates a strong barrier on the surface of the metal that adds resistance to corrosion and issues with moisture. Furthermore, this form of corrosion resistance is generally more affordable than other finishing options such as plating or painting the metal.
This is a chemical metal blackening process, which means that it works through the use of chemical agents that adhere to the surface of the metal being treated. Chemical finishing processes are desirable because they are capable of penetrating every nook and cranny of the metal’s surface. The entire surface area will be transformed by this metal blackening solution.
HIGH-QUALITY METAL BLACKING FROM BLACKFAST
Blackfast offers a specialist metal blacking process for manufacturing clients in the Midlands and across the UK. Our chemical blacking kit is both safe and easy-to-use, and it results in high-quality metal finishes that are able to withstand corrosion and humidity at a much more reasonable price point than metal plating.
WHY USE THE BLACKFAST METAL BLACKING PROCESS?
Blackfast's room temperature blacking process is a simple dip operation specifically designed for use in factories. The process results in a uniform colouring is obtained over machined surfaces, threads and blind holes. Blacking is achieved by chemical conversion of the metal surface. The process entails degreasing, immersion in a surface conditioner, and blacking solution. Corrosion protection is afforded by a final immersion in a dewatering oil.
WHY TO CONSIDER BLACKING METAL FOR YOUR NEXT PROJECT
There are several reasons to consider using a metal blacking kit for your next manufacturing project. The most important reason to take advantage of this process is the corrosion resistance it provides. Blackening metal makes the component stronger and more capable of standing up to the elements. As such, you can enjoy a longer lifespan from the component in question.
Furthermore, making use of a metal blackening kit is often preferable to (as well as more affordable than) alternatives such as plating. The blacking metal process adds approximately one micron to the surface of the metal. For most components, this amounts to a negligible increase in size, which means you don’t have to worry about the component no longer being suitable for its intended application.
Finally, a chemical blacking kit adds cosmetic value to the component as well. This is a highly affordable way to make a piece more attractive without having to significantly increase your overheads. For this reason, our clients often take advantage of this process for so-called ‘show pieces’ that will be in plain view – even if corrosion or durability are not particularly strong concerns.
OUR METAL BLACKING SERVICE IS AVAILABLE FOR THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF METAL:
Our products have been designed for:
We offer a free sampling service and can provide demonstrations either at your premises or at our sample processing facility/demonstration room that is ideally located for companies based in the Midlands and the surrounding counties.
We Also Offer Cold Blackening for Steel and Other Metals.
There are two distinct blacking processes that can be used for metal finishing. Hot metal blackening operates through the use of sodium hydroxide, which is combined with oxidizing agents such as sodium nitrate or sodium nitrite.
However, cold blackening of steel and some other ferrous metals is also possible. In this case, the process works at room temperature and does not require a hot solution in order to work. Chemical blackening of steel is made possible through the application of copper or selenium.
